Fiscal Year: 2025

BACKGROUND

In 2020, the AASHTO Committee on Bridges and Structures (COBS) initiated NCHRP Project 20-123(10) AASHTO Committee on Bridges and Structures Strategic Plan, Operating Guidelines and Research Roadmap Development. COBS has implemented the strategic plan, operating guidelines and research roadmap guidance, and reorganized the committee structure to better align with industry. Further committee support is needed in the research area to reflect and incorporate current needs.

Research is needed to help COBS focus its efforts in the areas of most need and to foster, support, monitor, disseminate and implement research in a way that benefits state departments of transportation (DOTs).

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this project is to develop a research roadmap to identify, support, disseminate, and implement research that can help state DOTs address pressing needs in bridges and structures and reflect current priorities and advancements in the field.

This request is to help COBS develop a framework to prioritize research needs for the overall committee to align with the COBS strategic plan. Additionally, this effort will involve working with other AASHTO committees (Construction, Design, Maintenance, etc.) and industry partners to set a clear and consistent direction for COBS research needs. The goals are to understand the committee needs of the future, improve research needs statements with collaboration from partners, and reduce duplication of efforts within the industry. Establishing the framework will help the committee define the topics and areas that are relevant to the committee and develop a plan to actively maintain and advance these focus areas. This effort may involve conducting multiple workshops with committee members and other stakeholders to gain insight into the priority needs of the industry. This effort will guide the technical and development committees to prioritize the research topics that will have the most impact and benefit to the industry.

POTENTIAL DELIVERABLES
