Transportation Program Responses to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction Initiatives and Energy Reduction Programs
[ NCHRP 25-25 (Research for the AASHTO Committee on Environment and Sustainability) ]

  Project Data
Funds: $100,000
Research Agency: Cambridge Systematics Inc.
Principal Investigator: Chris Porter
Effective Date: 5/5/2008
Completion Date: 10/31/2009
Comments: The project has been completed and the final report submitted to AASHTO

The prospect of global warming caused by an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a major policy issue. According to USDOT, the transportation sector is currently responsible for approximately one-quarter of GHG emissions in the United States and a majority of fuel consumption. Within the Federal-aid highway program states and metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) have the major decision-making authority for highway construction projects and system operations. This research provides background to understanding the relative GHG reduction and energy efficiency capability of transportation related strategies that States and MPOs can deliver.

The project has been completed and the final report submitted to the AASHTO Standing Committee on Environment.  The report is also available here.
