Many states have successfully implemented initiatives to enhance environmental stewardship and change the culture in construction and maintenance organizations to better avoid and minimize these potential impacts. One good example is PENNDOT's SEMP (Strategic Environmental Management Program). Other more specific initiatives have been aimed at erosion and sedimentation control, improvements in energy efficiency, recycling and use of recycled materials, facility management, wetland and stream preservation, context sensitive solutions, hazardous material substitution, and pursuit of ISO certifications. This project developed a compendium of environmental stewardship practices, policies, and procedures in the areas of construction and maintenance.
