Task 139, FY 2001, "Synthesis of Practice for European '2+1' Designs and American "Passing Lane" Designs", (Ingrid B. Potts). Several European countries use a design concept identified as a "2+1" design to improve the safety and operational capacity of selected two-lane highways. This concept involves widening a section of two-lane roadway to three lanes and striping the roadway in such a manner as to provide for passing lanes in alternating directions throughout the section. The objectives of this research are to evaluate European 2+1 roadway designs and, if applicable, develop recommendations for their application in the United States. The revised final report has been received and summarized inNCHRP Research Results Digest 275. (NCHRP Staff: B.R. Derr)
