Task 89, FY 1997, "LRFD Specifications for Plastic Pipe and Culverts" (Timothy McGrath, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc.). Design methodology and properties for plastic pipes and culverts are currently governed through procedures developed for metal products. The use of plastic pipe is increasing and, therefore, so is the need for provisions to assist bridge engineers to make safe, cost-effective use of these materials. The objective of this research was to develop design provisions for inclusion in the LRFD specifications, based on the state of the art for this material. The research included investigation of materials, properties, structural requirements, and governing principles of engineering mechanics. Additionally, calibration of information to the limit-states philosophy and appropriate target reliability indices of the LRFD specifications was done. The project was completed with the receipt of the revised final report in August 1999.

The project final report was published as NCHRP Report 438. (NCHRP contact E. Harrigan, eharriga@nas.edu).
