Task 77, FY 1996, "Improved Pavement Design Workshop" (Mr. Kenneth McGhee). The AASHTO Joint Task Force on Pavements is charged with the development and implementation of pavement design technologies. The Joint Task Force believes that improved design approaches will more realistically characterize in-place pavements and improve the reliability of designs. The Joint Task Force's position is that the next generation of pavement design approaches will be heavily dependent on mechanistic principles. A consultant was selected by the panel to serve as a facilitator for a 2-day workshop to define and prioritize the issues associated with and research needs for developing a mechanistic pavement design procedure. In addition, the consultant prepared a report documenting the results of the workshop held in March 1997. Also, the report identified specific research projects required to implement mechanistic pavement design procedures. The report has been distributed to members of the AASHTO Joint Task Force on Pavements. (NCHRP Staff: A.N. Hanna)
