Task 73, FY 1996, "High Strength Metric Fasteners for Bridge Applications" (Dr. Karl Frank). Tightening procedures, availability, and other issues associated with high-strength metric fasteners have raised questions in the bridge engineering community regarding new designs based on "hard metric" components. The objective of this task will be to assess the availability of metric fasteners for bridge applications, to delineate and evaluate technical issues associated with thread series, diameters, and other aspects of metric fasteners, and to provide guidance on the appropriate use of these fasteners. An advisory panel was formed, and a preliminary scope of work was developed. A research agency was selected but complications in developing a contract satisfactory to all parties delayed the start of work. The research agency provided the needed information based on research sponsored by the Texas DOT, and the study is no longer needed. (NCHRP Staff: D.B. Beal)
