Task 68, FY 1995, "Research on Polyethylene Pipe" (Dr. Lester Gabriel). The AASHTO Highway Committee on Materials initiated this task to study the use of polyethylene pipe as specified in AASHTO Standards M 294 and M 252. There were two primary issues: (1) A conflict between M 294 and Section 18 of the AASHTO Bridge Specifications on cell class requirements. This requirement is related to the environmental stress crack resistance property. (2) Use of postconsumer waste (recycled) in both specifications. The cell class differences between the Bridge and Materials specifications have existed for some time and must be resolved by AASHTO to speak with one voice. The recycling issue is becoming a problem in several states where the use of recycled plastic is being suggested for many products including polyethylene pipe. The consultant has evaluated the information and prepared a report. The report was transmitted to AASHTO in February 1996.
