NCHRP 15-42 [Completed]

Recommended Bicycle Lane Widths for Various Roadway Characteristics

  Project Data
Funds: $300,000
Research Agency: Midwest Research Institute
Principal Investigator: Darren Torbic
Effective Date: 6/27/2010
Completion Date: 10/1/2013

The objectives of this project are to: (1) develop recommended bicycle lane widths for various roadway and traffic characteristics, and (2) identify conditions under which shared lanes are a viable alternative to marked bicycle lanes. The products of the study should recommend desired and minimum bicycle lane widths based on sound research findings that consider all relevant roadway and traffic (motor vehicle and bicycle) characteristics. The final report should be accompanied by proposed text for inclusion in relevant AASHTO design publications and a PowerPoint presentation describing the background, objectives, research method, and findings of the study. The products of the research should be applicable and appropriate for use in all regions of the United States. The project is complete and the report has been published as NCHRP Report 766.
