NCHRP 20-07/Task 234 [Completed]

Guidelines for Selection of Bridge Deck Overlays, Sealers, and Treatments
[ NCHRP 20-07 (Research for AASHTO Standing Committee on Highways) ]

  Project Data
Funds: $99,986
Research Agency: Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.
Principal Investigator: Paul D. Krauss
Effective Date: 8/1/2007
Completion Date: 12/10/2008

The project is complete.  In addition to a review of current practices relevant to the use of overlays, sealers, and treatments for repairing deteriorating bridge decks, the report presents a  proposed 2-step process for selecting a deck repair option.  In the first step, general repair options are identified based on characterization of deck condition (e.g., deck distress and condition rating, estimated time-to-corrosion, surface condition, and concrete quality).  In the second step, the preferred option is selected based on site conditions (e.g., traffic constraints, dead load or overhead limitations, exposure conditions, deck condition and details, and anticipated service life) and other factors (e.g., planned future work and costs).  The report has been provided to AASHTO staff to make it available to the chair and members of the AASHTO Highway Subcommittee on Maintenance and other interested parties, and to consider publication by AASHTO.
