Improved Procedure for Laboratory Aging of Asphalt Binders in Pavements

  Project Data
Funds: $519,481
Research Agency: Advanced Asphalt Technologies, LLC
Principal Investigator: Dr. David A. Anderson
Effective Date: 2/17/2003
Completion Date: 9/30/2011
Comments: The project final report is available as NCHRP Project 709.

The objective of this study was to develop and validate a recommended procedure for the short-term laboratory aging of asphalt binders usable in a purchase specification such as AASHTO M320 that (1) is equally applicable to neat and modified materials, (2) mimics the physical changes that occur in HMA mixes conditioned in accordance with AASHTO PP2, (3) quantifies binder volatility, and (4) is extendible to long-term binder aging.

The project final report, including Appendix F, is available as NCHRP Report 709, Investigation of Short-Term Laboratory Aging of Neat and Modified Asphalt Binders.

The following appendixes to NCHRP Report 709 are available for download:

Appendix A: Binder Aging Bibliography

Appendix B: Selection Study Report

Appendix C: Volatile Collection System Study Report

Appendix D: SAFT Optimization Study Report

Appendix E: Verification Study Report
