Simple Performance Tester for Superpave Mix Design

  Project Data
Funds: $1,399,980
Research Agency: Advanced Asphalt Technologies, LLC
Principal Investigator: Ramon Bonaquist
Effective Date: 4/2/2001
Completion Date: 3/31/2011

The objectives of this research were to (1) design, procure, and evaluate simple performance testers for use in Superpave mix design and in HMA materials characterization for pavement structural design and (2) evaluate and refine the indirect tensile test (IDT) procedures proposed for use as the simple performance test for low-temperature cracking and as the materials characterization test for low-temperature cracking in the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide developed in NCHRP Project 1-37A.

The simple performance tester developed in this project is now available from several commercial sources as the Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT).

A final report of the first-article SPT procurement and evaluation (Phase II of the project) has been published as NCHRP Report 513: Simple Performance Tester for Superpave Mix Design: First-Article Development and Evaluation.

The final report for Phase III has been published as NCHRP Report 530: Evaluation of Indirect Tensile Test (IDT) Procedures for Low-Temperature Performance of Hot Mix Asphalt.

The final report for Phase IV of the project is available as NCHRP Report 614: Refining the Simple Performance Tester for Use in Routine Practice. The final report for Phase V is available as NCHRP Report 629: Ruggedness Testing of the Dynamic Modulus and Flow Number Tests with the Simple Performance Tester.

The Phase VI final report is available as NCHRP Report 702: Precision of the Dynamic Modulus and Flow Number Tests Conducted with the Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester.

An Excel workbook used in conjunction with the Simple Performance Tester to develop dynamic modulus master curves is available for download at

http://onlinepubs.trb.org/onlinepubs/nchrp/docs/NCHRP09-29_mastersolver2-2.xls. The workbook has the capability to solve a modified version of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide master curve equation.
