Extreme weather, like Hurricane Helene’s unexpected damage to Asheville Regional Airport, can severely disrupt operations, incurring costly and time-consuming repairs. Airports may need to serve as emergency evacuation hubs or maintain operations during such events, necessitating robust infrastructure investments. But airports face challenges in prioritizing and funding resilient infrastructure.
Resources are lacking that detail asset-level planning and analysis (e.g., for runways, electrical systems, drainage) to identify critical risks and failure points. Airports need practical, detailed guidelines for investment prioritization to enhance operational resilience against hazards.
The objective of this research is to provide resources and tools for the planning and prioritization of building or enhancing resilient infrastructure.
