This project produced CD-ROM versions of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Materials Specification (16th edition) and the 1994 Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (the latter of which is also known as the "Green Book"). After review and refinement, AASHTO published both CD-ROMs.
AASHTO offers more than 100 publications, including many widely used technical documents. Increasingly, users are requesting documents in an electronic format such as CD-ROM (compact disc, read-only memory). This format allows easier access and cross-referencing of the information and can considerably reduce the bulk of the information. The format can also add significant value through techniques like use of multimedia and ready access to commentary.
In this project, Applied Research Associates developed and evaluated CD-ROM versions of two AASHTO technical documents. The project also provided recommendations and guidelines to AASHTO for future use of this technology.
