The project reviewed strategies for quantifying corrosion-induced deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge superstructure elements, methods for predicting remaining service life, and approaches for maintenance and repair and their effects on service life of bridge elements, and a presented plan for developing a manual that provides step-by-step procedures for assessing bridge element condition, remaining service life, and the effects of maintenance and repair options.
Corrosion-induced deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge superstructure elements is a common and costly problem in the United States. A rational decision regarding the maintenance, repair, or replacement of such deteriorated elements must take into account the condition of the element and the extent of deterioration, the expected remaining service life, and the impact of alternative maintenance and repair options on service life of such elements. However, available publications do not provide reliable procedures for evaluating the existing condition of corrosion-damaged elements or approaches for comparing the effectiveness of maintenance and repair alternatives. Without such information, the process of selecting the optimum repair strategy becomes difficult. Thus, there is a need for research to identify or develop suitable procedures for assessing the condition of corrosion-damaged bridge elements, estimating the expected remaining service life of such elements, and determining the effects of maintenance and repair options on their service life. This project provided the first step in the process for achieving this objective. Further research will be performed under NCHRP Project 18-06A.
Research included review of relevant domestic and foreign literature, analysis of current practices for quantifying corrosion-induced deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge superstructure elements, evaluation of methods for predicting remaining service life, and identification of approaches for maintenance and repair.
