NCHRP IDEA 20-30/IDEA 195 [Completed (IDEA)]

Development of an IDEAL Cracking Test for Asphalt Mix Design, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance

  Project Data
Funds: $137,000
Staff Responsibility: Inam Jawed
Research Agency: Texas Transportation Institute/Texas A&M University
Principal Investigator: Fujie Zhou
Fiscal Year: 2018

This project developed a simple, reliable, performance-based indirect tensile asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT) for asphalt mix design, quality control and quality assurance. The test was developed with particular attention to three critical features: repeatability, sensitivity, and a good correlation with field cracking performance. A draft AASHTO test procedure for the IDEAL-CT was developed and was also prepare in the ASTM format. The test procedure successfully passed the ASTM D04.26 Subcommittee balloting and currently is going through the last round balloting in D04 Committee on Construction.  The researchers worked with three equipment manufacturers (InstroTek, Testquip, and Controls-USA (or IPC Global)) to develop standalone test machines and fixtures for the IDEAL-CT. As of now, each of them developed their own standalone test machines for the IDEAL-CT. In addition, InstroTek developed an IDEAL-CT fixture fitting for use on existing machines or loading frames. The research team also shared the data processing template with a number of state DOTs, asphalt industry, and equipment manufacturers. As a part of the implementation efforts, a video on the test method was developed and posted on the YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB4pQDB2Yfs).  The test was also published in the trade magazine, Roads and Bridges (https://www.roadsbridges.com/ideal-candidate). The research team is working with the NCHRP Implementation Program in collaboration with a number of state DOTs to implement the test for mix design, quality control, and quality assurance.
The final report is available.
