Comments: Updated versions of the AASHTO Highway Drainage Guidelines and the AASHTO Model Drainage Guidelines delivered to AASHTO

Research conducted under NCHRP Project 15-23 resulted in information for use by the AASHTO Technical Committee on Hydrology and Hydraulics in: (1) updating the 1999 Metric Editions of the AASHTO Highway Drainage Guidelines (HDG) and the AASHTO Model Drainage Manual (MDM), (2) converting the updated HDG to dual units, and (3) preparing a companion MDM in customary U.S. units.

Work under NCHRP Project 20-40, "Conversion of AASHTO Publications and Software to Metric," produced the AASHTO Model Drainage Manual (MDM) (1999 Metric Edition; 1,248 pages) and the AASHTO Highway Drainage Guidelines (HDG) (1999 Metric Edition; 740 pages). These publications were prepared through a joint effort of the project contractors and the AASHTO Technical Committee on Hydrology and Hydraulics. The preceding publications in customary U.S. units are the 1991 MDM and the 1992 HDG. The 1999 Metric Edition HDG needed to be updated and converted into dual units (AASHTO Metric [i.e., SI] and customary U.S.). The 1999 Metric Edition MDM needed to be updated, and a companion customary U.S. version needed to be produced. The MDM is used by some state DOTs as their manual of practice and by others as a reference document to produce their own state drainage manuals. The HDG also is used as a reference for understanding and defining highway hydraulic/drainage practice in the United States.

This research substantially assisted the AASHTO Technical Committee on Hydrology and Hydraulics in meeting its goal of producing an updated dual-unit HDG, an updated metric version MDM, and an updated customary U.S. version MDM by 2003.

Status: Research is complete. The final updated versions of the MDMs and HDG were submitted to the AASHTO Technical Committee on Hydrology and Hydraulics.

Product Availability: The final updated versions of the MDMs (both the AASHTO Metric version and the customary U.S. version) and the updated dual-unit version of the HDG can be purchased from AASHTO. Information on purchasing AASHTO publications can be found at https://transportation.org.
