Rail Neutral Temperature Monitoring for Rail Transit
[ TCRP J-04 (Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis--The Transit IDEA Program) ]

  Project Data
Funds: $99,448
Staff Responsibility: Velvet Basemera-Fitzpatrick
Research Agency: Protran Technology
Principal Investigator: Peter M. Bartek
Effective Date: 2/2/2014
Completion Date: 8/30/2017
Fiscal Year: 2013

This project aimed to reduce the accident derailment rate by further developing and testing unique Intelligent Rail Integrity System (IRIS) to determine the conditions leading to changes in Rail Neutral Monitoring Temperature (RNT), and provide the means to continuously monitor RNT in critical curve and abutment locations, to measure this effect, and communicate the condition to an IRIS website for remote access. The key advantages developed under this IDEA program are as follows:

• Real time monitoring
o Rail Delta Changes (movement in stresses)
   o Localized Air Temperature
   o Rail Ambient Temperature
• Data Logging
• Real time communications
   o Control Center
   o Transit vehicle operators
• Conditions to a website for remote access.
