The AASHTO Movable Bridge Inspection, Evaluation, and Maintenance Manual (Manual) was first issued in 1998 and is still currently available in this first edition. In the intervening years, there have been many new developments in bridge design and analysis methodologies, as well as many developments in bridge inspection, evaluation and maintenance that were not contemplated in the 1998 edition. For example, the AASHTO Highway Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures (HSCOBS) has adopted the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, the Manual for Bridge Evaluation, and the AASHTO Guide Manual for Bridge Element Inspection. Correspondingly, a companion document for the design of movable bridges, incorporating the LRFD methodology, was adopted and is currently in its 2nd edition, 2007.
The objective of this research was to propose revisions to the AASHTO Movable Bridge Inspection, Evaluation, and Maintenance Manual. The revisions prepared recognizing the latest developments in movable bridge design, inspection, evaluation, and maintenance practices. Additionally, the proposed revisions is consistent with adopted AASHTO specifications and manuals, and FHWA National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and Bridge Inspector's Reference Manual.
