While many prominent examples of livability are in urban and suburban areas, local, state, and federal agencies are exploring how rural areas can better support, embrace, and improve community livability. The grants provided as part of the Partnership for Sustainable Communities (PSC) are one resource that can help support rural areas working to develop more livable communities. This digest includes strategies that DOTs can use to help rural organizations be more competitive when applying for discretionary grant programs. It also includes strategies to advance transit-related solutions to rural mobility challenges, and a framework for project development processes that would lead to the expansion of rural public transportation.
