Transit IDEA J-04/IDEA 063 [Completed (IDEA)]

Improving Bus Transit On-Time Performance through the Use of AVL Data
[ TCRP J-04 (Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis--The Transit IDEA Program) ]

  Project Data
Staff Responsibility: Jo Allen Gause
Research Agency: Pascal Systems
Principal Investigator: Jack M. Reilly
Fiscal Year: 2010

This project developed a set of desktop tools to analyze archived fixed-route transit automatic vehicle location (AVL) data for the purpose of measuring on-time performance and developing schedule times (running times) between timepoints. The tools were developed using data from the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) in Albany, NY.

The project also intended to determine if the tools developed could be exported to other transit agencies with a different AVL system than that used by CDTA.  Application of the tools to transit systems in Ann Arbor and Allentown demonstrated that the system could be exported to develop appropriate running times on data from different AVL products.

The contractor's final report is available.
