The NCHRP and FHWA have jointly sponsored 3 international scans on freight transport as follows:

• Freight Transportation: The European Market--2002
• Freight Transportation: The Latin American Market--2003
• Freight Mobility and Intermodal Connectivity in China--2007

 Reports for all 3 scan are available.  This project was to summarize the findings from these scan reports with particular emphasis on the recommendations for changes in practices in the United States.  Recommendations for new research areas were to inform the National Cooperative Freight Research Program Oversight Committee.  A preliminary draft final report was submitted for NCFRP review.  Given the difficulty in defining substantive recommendations for future research, the NCFRP decided not to pursue the project any further.   The author’s draft report is available on request.  In addition, the FHWA had concurrently written a summary report as well.
