The objective of this research was to develop guidelines for the design and management of historic roads. Because each historic road presents unique challenges, these guidelines would allow sufficient flexibility to successfully integrate safety, roadway performance, and historic preservation. For the purposes of this project, two broad categories of historic roads were considered: (1) roads that themselves are listed or eligible and (2) roads that are located within listed or eligible historic districts or landscapes that link or serve historic properties or viewscapes beyond their rights of way.

The project final report is available as NCHRP Web-Only 189: Design and Management of Historic Roads.
