High Speed Rail IDEA Project 22 [Completed (IDEA)]

Low-Cost, Drift-Free DGPS Locomotive Navigation System

  Project Data
Funds: $94,706
Staff Responsibility: Chuck Taylor
Effective Date: 11/23/1999
Completion Date: 5/8/2001
Fiscal Year: 1999

A prototype locomotive location system was developed using a GPS receiver, a heading rate gyro and input from the locomotive odometer.  Prototype testing revealed that the system could meet the stringent location accuracy required by Positive Train Control systems.   Based on these findings, a follow-on contract (HSR-35) was awarded to develop and test a production prototype.  For a more complete summary of both of these projects, see the summary for HSR-35.
