The concept to be explored in this project was the use of a pulsed LED light source for the flashing lights at grade crossings.  Test highway vehicles would be equipped with an optical detector that would respond to the unique pulse signature of these LED crossing lights and  provide the highway vehicle operator with a warning that he or she is approaching an active crossing.

This project was never completed due to problems with developing a prototype system that met all performance requirements, and with field test logistics that required the participation of a local city government to equip crossings and vehicles with the system.
