ROADWAY MEASUREMENT SYSTEM EVALUATION (S03)

An evaluation of mobile data collection services in providing roadside and roadway characteristics of high priority for safety analysis.
This evaluation of the precision and accuracy of mobile roadway inventory data collection services produced a list of roadway data elements that form the basis for surveying the roadway characteristics of roads traveled by participants in the naturalistic driving study.

Staff Responsibility: Charles Fay

SHRP 2 Safety research is conducting a naturalistic driving study (NDS) that monitors drivers in their cars.

The objective of this project was to develop, organize, and conduct a roadway measurement accuracy evaluation (rodeo).

The rodeo was part of a prequalification stage for project S04B (Mobile Data Collection), which will provide roadway data on selected roads within each naturalistic driving study site; these data will be in a GIS and linkable with the SHRP 2 NDS data.

Ten commercial data collection vendors participated in the rodeo evaluation.  Participants were evaluated for accuracy and precision to collect roadway data at highway speed, and under “real world”  conditions likely to be encountered during the S04B project.

Status: The project is complete.
