DESIGN OF THE IN-VEHICLE DRIVING BEHAVIOR AND CRASH RISK STUDY (S05)

Management plan for in-vehicle field study; hardware and software for instrumenting vehicles; data intake, processing, and quality control; data documentation for users.
By the end of this study in November 2013, 3900 participant-years of data will have been collected, making it the largest study of its kind yet undertaken. The study design has addressed a range of challenges and will be a useful resource for similar studies, in the US and abroad.

Staff Responsibility: Kenneth Campbell

SHRP 2 Safety research is conducting a naturalistic driving study (NDS) that monitors drivers in their cars.

The objective of this project was to design the in-vehicle driving behavior and crash risk study, also known as the SHRP 2 NDS.

The SHRP 2 NDS will collect naturalistic or “real world” driving behavior, including kinematics and video, for approximately 3,100 volunteer drivers over a 2-year period beginning in fall/winter 2010. The NDS is expected to yield approximately 3,900 data years of driver behavior. In addition, demographics, vehicle inventory, driver assessment, and crash investigation data will also be collected. Six regions will serve as data collection sites to provide as wide a range of geography, weather, state laws, road types, and road usage as feasible. Quality, management, and security protocols are being applied in the NDS. Data that are collected during the study are expected to provide researchers with a wealth of information related to driver behavior and crash causation.

Status: The project is complete.
