This synthesis will be of interest to traffic engineers, safety engineers, and others concerned with pedestrian safety. Information is presented on the traffic-control measures being used by states and local agencies to enhance pedestrian safety. Approximately 15 to 20 percent of all highway fatalities are pedestrians, and although most pedestrian accidents occur in urban areas, all agencies should pay more attention to the needs of pedestrians.
