This workshop developed research problem statements that could assist U.S. transit agencies in increasing ridership. The results of the workshop will be of interest to groups searching for research projects to undertake on their own.
The objective of this project was to provide a comprehensive, "global" review of the factors that influence transit ridership in order to establish an agenda for future research aimed at increasing transit ridership in the U.S. The products of this effort included a workshop to (1) discuss the various factors impacting U.S. transit ridership (indicating which factors are most relevant to the transit industry today); and (2) discuss recent/current research efforts for each factor and identify where these efforts are sufficient and where new research should be undertaken. This project provided a systematic framework for identifying factors affecting current transit ridership to assist in focusing research efforts in those areas most in need of further study.
The TOPS Committee selected the following projects from the TCRP Project H-5 workshop for funding in the FY 1995 program: TCRP Project B-8, Effective Methods of Marketing Transit Services to Business, TCRP Project B-9, Market Segmentation Strategies to Increase Transit Ridership, TCRP Project B-10, Role of Passenger Amenities and Transit Vehicle Characteristics in Building Ridership, TCRP Project B-11, Customer-Defined Transit Service Quality, TCRP Project A-14, Potential of Multipurpose Fare Media and Cashless Fare Collection, and TCRP Project J-6, Task 6, Integrating Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Paratransit Services and Health and Human Services Transportation. The results of these studies will be published in the TCRP Report series as they are completed.
A workshop was conducted on November 18-19, 1994. TCRP Research Results Digest 6, "Research Agenda for Increasing Transit Ridership," resulted, which summarizes the research needs identified at the workshop. TCRP RRD 6 is also available in portable document format (PDF). Double-click on the file below to access the RRD. (A free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader is available at https://www.adobe.com.)
