Field Procedures and Equipment to Implement SHRP Asphalt Specifications

  Project Data
Funds: $1,085,784
Research Agency: Brent Rauhut Engineering
Principal Investigator: Ronald Cominsky
Effective Date: 4/1/1993
Completion Date: 7/15/1997

This project developed a quality control/quality acceptance (QC/QA) plan in AASHTO standard format for hot mix asphalt (HMA) paving projects incorporating Superpave mix designs.

The objectives of this research were to (1) establish comprehensive procedures and, if required, develop equipment for quality control/quality assurance at the asphalt plant and laydown site to ensure that asphalt pavements meet the SHRP performance-related specifications and (2) develop a framework for a training program for qualifying technicians to accomplish the QC/QA field procedures developed.

The final report was published as NCHRP Report 409, "Quality Control and Acceptance of Superpave-Designed Hot Mix Asphalt." It is also available with the final reports for NCHRP Projects 9-8 and 9-9 on the CD-ROM CRP-CD-1: Bituminous Materials Research Series. The QC/QA plan was submitted to AASHTO in the form of a recommended practice in February 1998 for consideration and possible adoption.
