The NCHRP Implementation Support Program enabled the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to use NCHRP research reports and other resources to prepare a new Governor-appointed “Commission on the Future of Transportation in the Commonwealth” to review transportation needs across the Commonwealth and craft a vision for addressing those needs. The effort used the “workshop in a Box” developed for the NCHRP Foresight Series, in a similar effort to a March 2016 workshop where senior leaders at MassDOT and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) that considered the forces cited in the Foresight Series and how they could impact MassDOT and therefore the Commonwealth, over the next twenty years.

The Commission focused on 5 key areas:

  • Climate and resiliency;
  • Transportation electrification;
  • Autonomous and connected vehicles, including ride-sharing services;
  • Transit and mobility services; and
  • Land use and demographic trends.

More information about the Commission can be found here.

COMMISSION IN A BOX

The effort developed a "Commission in a Box" module as an addition to the existing products developed under the NCHRP Foresight Series. You can find the Foresight Series page here.
