Low-Speed Automated Vehicles (LSAV) in Public Transportation

  Project Data
Funds: $60,000
Research Agency: Mobility e3 LLC
Principal Investigator: Kelly Conyer
Effective Date: 10/30/2018
Completion Date: 6/23/2020

BACKGROUND

Commercial deployment of Low-Speed Automated Vehicles (LSAV) --often called AV shuttles-- was projected to begin in about 2020, but is currently underway. Pioneering transit agencies are taking steps to conduct pilots and need guidance to successfully use this new technology. Nine pilots of LSAV services have been announced and another 40 communities and campuses have expressed interest in LSAV pilots. Some of the communities initiating the LSAV pilots include: 1) Arlington, TX; 2) Las Vegas, NV; 3) Tampa, FL; and 4) Jacksonville, FL.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this research was to develop guidance for transit agencies and communities on the development and deployment of LSAV pilots. The guidance should provide lessons learned from the initial pilots that are underway and soon to be launched.

STATUS
The research is completed and has been submitted for publication.  A copy of the research team's final report is available here.
