An airport safety management system (SMS) is a powerful tool for reducing the hazards and risks of aircraft accidents/incidents and runway incursions during approaches, takeoffs and ground operations. This issue has been seriously considered in several parts of the world besides being an ICAO standard for the international airports since November 2005.

The objective of this task was to develop an overview document regarding airport safety management systems that defines what such a system is, and provides a summary of existing practice in other countries and industries.
