NCHRP Synthesis 20-05/Topic 19-02 [Final (Synthesis)]

Uniformity Efforts in Oversize/Overweight Permits
[ NCHRP 20-05 (Synthesis of Information Related to Highway Practices) ]

  Project Data

The purpose of this synthesis is to summarize efforts directed at achieving national uniformity in the basic elements of oversize and overweight permit functions for nondivisible loads. Key results of research efforts on this topic over the past 20 years are summarized. Also described are six state-level efforts, three national-level efforts, and one industry-level effort aimed at developing common, multistate agreements. One state-level effort in particular appears to provide a positive experience in developing a common set of permit procedures: five New England states signed an agreement on April 28, 1987, and expect to have a common set of permit procedures fully operational by early 1989.  The report for this topic can be purchased at https://www.trb.org/news/blurb_detail.asp?id=3414
